Celebrate National Mentoring Month!

January is National Mentoring Month! Its goal is to promote youth mentoring in the United States and recruit individuals and organizations to become mentors. Celebrate this great effort by showing movies that demonstrate how impactful a mentor/student relationship can be!

There are many great movies with strong examples of a positive mentor and mentee relationship. Here are some of our favorites!

Sean Maguire & Will Hunting

Genie & Aladdin

Dumbledore & Harry Potter

Mr. Miyagi & The Karate Kid

Frankie Dunn & Margaret “Maggie” Fitzgerald

Katherine Watson & Students

Haymitch Abernathy & Katniss Everdeen

Gordon Bombay & the Mighty Ducks

Aslan & the Pevensie Children

Coach Ken Carter & the team

Research has shown that youths who have a mentor growing up are less likely to engage in risky behavior, and more likely to excel in their academics, participate in extracurricular activities and thrive in general.

Be sure to have resources available for students and their parents if they are interested in finding a mentor. Also, consider becoming a mentor yourself. As a mentor, you could gain self-esteem, foster a better understanding of other cultures, learn something about yourself, improve your attitude, and enhance your relationships with your own children.
